چکیده

We describe the further development of a circularly polarized helmet coil for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the human brain at 3 T. The coil is used in transmit and receive (transceive) mode, a useful alternative over commercially available quadrature headcoils with scanners where phased arrays are unavailable. The coil is simple to build. Its structure is based on an assembly of two coplanar dual-loop coils of the split-circle design, which are arranged in crossed fashion. Both coils circumscribe dome-like the human head. Because of the symmetry of the assembly, a high degree of circularly polarized radiofrequency (RF) is obtained within the brain. Bench and in situ measurements of the RF magnetic field, B1, indicated good axial homogeneity and a moderate gradient along the symmetry axis. Compared to a commercial birdcage coil, the signal-to-noise ratio was increased up to a factor of 1.7 as a result of its superior filling factor. Initial applications in healthy volunteers included anatomical MRI and functional imaging with a cognitive paradigm. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 96-Channel receive-only head coil for 3 Tesla: design optimization and evaluation.

The benefits and challenges of highly parallel array coils for head imaging were investigated through the development of a 3T receive-only phased-array head coil with 96 receive elements constructed on a close-fitting helmet-shaped former. We evaluated several designs for the coil elements and matching circuitry, with particular attention to sources of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) loss, includin...

Human Brain Imaging at 9.4 Tesla Using a Combination of Traveling Wave Excitation with a 15-channel Receive-only Array

Introduction The combination of a circularly polarized (CP) volume coil for spin excitation with a multi-channel receive-only array is a successful setup for routine human brain imaging at 7 Tesla. For reception, the use of multiple surface coils is important for a high SNR and for the utilization of parallel imaging techniques. For transmission, the main strength of the CP coil is the reasonab...

A 1H-31P Array Coil for Human Brain Spectroscopy at 3 T

Previously, a modular approach has been suggested for designing large arrays [1]. It is based on a stacked combination of loop coils and microstrip transmission-line (MTL) elements, which are intrinsically orthogonal. In this work, this concept was adopted to build a helmet-shaped, dual-tuned array coil for human brain P spectroscopy and H decoupling and imaging at 3 T. The H channel is based o...

Effect of Verapamil Administration on Hypoxic Human Fetal Brain after Lactate detection by 1H Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HMRS)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of verapamil administration on Human Fetuses in High Risk Pregnancies (FHRP) by Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (HMRS) after Lactate identification. Two HMRS studies were performed on a 1.5 Tesla system using the body RF coil: the first one was done between 30-31 weeks of gestation and the second between 34-35 weeks after verapamil adm...
